Project Natal will get you Moving Cheaper [Update]

image

At GDC 2010 this week, Sony showed off the PlayStation Move, a copy cat to the Wii remote and Nunchuk for the most part, calling it the "next generation of motion gaming". The only difference really is the PSMove uses the PlayStation Eye camera and the Wii doesn’t.

The PlayStation Move starter kit will be under $100, so $99.99 I'm guessing. What’s in the kit? A PS Eye, a controller, and a game, the Nunchuk or “Sub-controller" will be sold separately as Nintendo did with the Nunchuk. It’s going to be pretty costly to get enough for a family of say 4 to get in the games together.

Let’s say the PSMove kit is $90, the standalone Move remote $50 and Sub-controller $20. So for 4 people to play together could possibly cost you: $90+$70+$70+$70 = $300 in total! $90+$70+$70+$50 = $280

[Update] The price was adjusted above because it turns out, only 2 Sub-controller’s are supported since the PS3’s Bluetooth support is limited to only seven connections. Four PSMove controllers can connect to a PS3 at one time allowing 4 players to play but only two players if the sub-controller’s are used, two PSMove Controllers and 2 PSMove sub-controllers, because of this Bluetooth limitation.

Now for Project Natal. We know nothing about price at this time but it’s rumored to be under $100, at one time even rumored at $50. The difference with Project Natal is that only one item is needed for the imagewhole family to enjoy, the Project Natal sensor device, making your body the controller. Separate controllers are not needed to start Moving with Project Natal. The cost to Jump In will be a lot less then the PlayStation Move if you consider buying for the whole family and if indeed under $100 for Project Natal then possibly cheaper than the initial PlayStation Move kit.

Being that Project Natal uses only your body as a controller, it will be easier to get a non-gamer Moving, so I’m banking on Project Natal to out sell the PlayStation Move by Millions!

  1. Wow, this is the most bias piece of shit ever. M$ loves money, with their 120 dollar harddrives and 100 dollar wireless adaptors. Your speculation is pure and utter crap.

  2. You do realize Natal is a copycat of the PS2 EyeToy, right?

The Move is the best solution because it has the best of both worlds (Wii and Natal).

Natal is plagued with game breaking lag, and the precision is laughably bad. Have you even tried it? It's so bad I don't know which type of games they think will work on it.

  3. PS3 is cheaper. If you want the same functionality offered by Nata;, just buy the PS Eye. At least you will not have any lag. The PS Eye is cheaper.

Now the Move truly is a marvel, and if people want to play beyond, they can choose to pay the additional cost.

Unlike Natal, future PS3 games with Move support will allow you to choose to play with regular controls. The shovelware minigames that Natal will receive cannot offer this.

  4. Really...
    really...
    lolz.
I am pretty sure the implication for Natal far outweigh what Sony just showed up with.
Natal is anything = eye toy plus camera plus wii remote plus sisax. Its a cheap unobtrusive all in one device and it has FACIAL and VOICE recognition. Even if the games blow I can use it turn my 360 on or off and I can operate the dash a swish of my hand. It will recognise my freinds when it comes over and more to the point...I dont need flippin 10 differant peripherals to use it! crickey.
Sorry if the article writer didn't make his point well.

  5. this guy is stupid, it may be cheaper but to play with 4 people, you may well have to buy a new house. Not many people have a house where 4 poeple could stand in front of 1 camera with their hands and legs being able to spread freely. Think before you write you imbecile.

  6. lols!

    X2theG

you do know that the PSMove is created using Z Camera and Motion Capture technology back in 2004, right?

So anything Wii-like and Project Natal-like games & functionality is right up PSMove alley.

    lols!

  7. lol well Project Natal uses the xbox360 to process all sensor motions, so the load on the system is going to prevent it from creating true state of the art games, instead were going to get an influx of worthless shovelware, in the form of gimmick games, its the Wii all over again. With Playstation Move we're going to get what was promised with the wii, a state of the art motion interactive experience.

Sorry that last post was poorly written.
Natal has 70%! of global developers signed up for making games for natal. This move thingy has only 36 developers in total.

Did we mention you don't need any other controllers. Did I mention that you can control the 360 and dash with your voice! Did I mention it will be able to recognise faces and store them not to mention individual 'bodies'. Did I mention that Natal will be reletivley easily updated through LIVE as software and firmware without needing to buy any other peripherals that will become obsolete. Did I mention that move is just a downright confusing name! (and smacks of last minute change because people found out about 'arc' - which was a better name)Did u see that the PS3 is now getting WII imports... ...the only bias here is actually, an asian one, sorry

  9. the comments on here are pretty funny. The PSEye had a camera yes, but little else to compare with the technology in the Natal bar (3d lenses, infrared, voice and facial recognition) The lag in Natal was noted by some, but couldn't tell if they just didn't have enough time to get used to it. I would say the same with "Move" a few are suggesting no lag, while others are suggesting a lot of lag. I know Sony likes to put out quality so I would say once this ships the lag will be non issue as will Natal's lag. However, in my opinion the Natal tech is a true step forward and pricing looks to be between $50-$75, compared to much higher pricing for Move. I will admit the MS pricing has been terrible regarding most peripherals, however this is something they want to sell for everyone to use.

  10. lol wow micro$oft is ALL about money,,,,, you honestly think a gadget that is going to "revolutionize" gameing will be under 100 or even 50 bucks?? when they charge for EVERYTHING, im paying good money to get a seriously laggy game in gears of war 2???? where non stop glitching is taking place??? or how about some MW2??? with all the non stop glitching??? im paying for this/??? allxbox is is modded xboxes... FF just came out and there is ALREADy money hacks... and ect.... its a joke,.....

  11. Just look at all the ps fanboys get defensive, it's just so funny! Natal is nothing like the eyetoy and it vastly outperforms it, and this move copy of nintendo is so lame. Sony really dropped the ball, Natal is just one device with so many possible applications for not just gaming.

  12. I love how so many people are getting mad about this on a blog with XBOX in the name...

Not to mention, he has some fine points. If Microsoft believes their Natal can stand up to the Move, then you're clearly getting the same value for a lower price. This is undeniable.

Also, all companies love money, so MS doing the same doesn't mean a thing. You make more money if you sell more units, and you sell more units by offering great value at a low price.

And sony pretty obviously thought of the Move as a new gimmick like the eye toy originally, they didn't seem to care much about it at E3, but now they think they've struck gold with their wii knock-off, so they're acting like it's just as good as Microsoft's brand-new-console-in-an-addon, even though they never anticipated something like that.

  13. In a side note, EA is embracing Playstation Move, as well as 35 other developers.

Still looking for some type of confirmation Natal.

    Maybe someone can help?

  14. lol i can just see someone walking in the way messing everything upp... how does it detect your GF or friends who sit right next to you..... lol a huge problem noones talking about?? xbox is great dont get me wrong i have both systems but i prefer ps3 its simple..... xbox has been out 4years? and ive had 5 die and crash on me... so lets see here.... in just 4 years time.... 5 have broken.... not just me here... theres a reason gamestop stoped giving warenty for this console.... it breaks plain and simple.... maybe im the exception??? stats say otherwise as this console is the worst EVER for reliability..... hell my xbox 1 still works like a champ.... so odoes my ps1 and ps2 over a decade old.... can you seriously say 8years from now you can dust off that very first 360 purchased and play some games on it???? of course not.... zero % chance

  16. To me it comes down to what either company is trying to accomplish with there device. Natal is a device for families and kiddies and grandma's. Hence the lower price and claims that everyone can use it right away. The Move is being developed with the thought of actually being a complement to mainstream games, Killzone 3, SOCOM 4 and such. The Natal system really doesn't lend itself to being useful for an actual game, a full on major release's control scheme is just too complicated to work with Natal, imagine trying to use it to play Assassin's Creed II for instance.

Microsoft saying that more people are making games for Natal doesn't really have any merit because more dev's make Wii games then for any other platform and only 5% of them are worth a damn. They can also say it has 3D cameras, facial recognition, and voice recognition but they still haven't really said what the merit to any of that is going to be for the average gamer. I guess you could use it when creating an in game character, and that's about it, which hardly justifies the cost of the device. For a family with a 360 that wants to play a Kart racer yeah I would heartily recommend buying it. But for a more serious gamer I have yet to see any reason or justification for the technology to even exist. Other then Molyneux saying its awesome, which holds about as much weight as the crazy guy down the street who talks to trees.

Sony clearly outlined the benefit of its system to gamers and to families alike. Motion sensing is great stuff but without a reference point when you're using it, its just anarchy. When I demoed Natal with 3 people it didn't work, it just didn't. Move did work when we used it together or separately.

In the end saying that Natal will sell more then Move means nothing as to the quality of the product. The Wii sold more systems then the 360 but I highly doubt anyone would say its a better product. PS2 outsold the original Xbox and it wasn't a better system either. I doubt I will buy either product because for no money I can still play my games with a controller which happens to be what dev's make games for anyways. So congratulations Sony and Microsoft have succeeded in making people care about something they never needed or wanted in the first place.

  17. Writer you are an Idiot. Its hard to find gamers with 4 wii motes or four dual shocks, or four xbox controllers. Plus if you add up the forty dollar wii mote with a twenty dollar nunchuck and a 15 dollar motion plus, what do you get? 40+20+15=75 dollars for an inferior product that doesn't capture as much motion and doesn't produce high definition gaming (which you cant even buy a non HD television anymore I don't think.) I think you need to stop drinking the Microsoft and Nintendo Koolaid and realize that Sony has something good going on here and it will be successful.

  18. Its all stupid!!! I don't want to move my body while playing a game!
The Wii was is stupid. The PS MOVE is an upgrade of stupid, and Natal took stupid to a whole new level. I'm tired of people saying that this is revolutionary. If this actually is revolutionary, i'm scared for how the future of gaming will turn out.

  19. PS EyeToy actually did facial/voice recognition within some games. It didn't have steroscopic lenses which really is the only difference between the EyeToy/PSEye and Natal. You may get a Minority Report type of interface which I admit is kickass...but I cannot see the point of buying a peripheral just for a new way to control the UI on the 360??? Games will be crap, we have seen tech demos of Burnout Paradise using Natal, and it looks anooyingly inaccurate. ie. either flooring it or not pressing the pedal at all. This is a major issue when it comes to body movements. You will need a well lit area, imagine playing games at night in the dark, would it pick up your movements using just a camera, and if it does, will it be perfect at finding your "edges" meaning can it be 1:1 in low-light if it can't do 1:1 in good lighting? NO! If you think Natal will be game changing then enjoy your delusions. How do you play an FPS with Natal? How do you play action/adventure games with Natal? YOU CAN'T! It would be an extremely dumbed down version of the game (Wii) to make it work, or the controls would just be to convoluted to work. (ie. gesture controls...)

Who said the Move cannot be used to control the interface on the PS3? Who knows, for the UI on the PS3 they may even include an update to allow the PSEye to recognize gesture controls on the XMB, they already have the framework made since the EyeToy and PSEye both use gesture controls for existing games without a peripheral.

Basically what I am saying is that Natal will get MS stuck into a shovelware/niche corner. While the PS Move can be applied to every single existing/future game. I don't really see how the Natal has a leg to stand on except for blind fanboys, still holding onto their 5th 360.

ps. whoever stated 70% of all devs worldwide are creating for Natal is obviously 12 or completely illiterate. What was stated by MS was that the SDK was sent to over 70% of devs, and they expressed interest in the format. Doesn't mean they will make anything. Sony has 36 3rd-Party devs creating tangible games at the moment that will be out at around launch/holidays. That is on top of all of their own 1st-party devs, who tend to make better games than any 3rd party studio consistently. MS will never take top spot in console wars this gen, last gen, next gen, gen after that, etc. etc. etc without their own first party devs.

Sony gets bashed for the first 4 years of both the PS2 and PS3...wait what ended up happening last gen with the PS2? It couldn't be the most successful console ver made could it???Even after the DVD laser issues, low stock, high price point at launch? NO.... lol short term memories belong to xbots.

  20. Look at all the PS fanboys crying; in the words of Arnold - "Stop Whining." The PS Move looks unimpressive, and the Eyetoy was a piece of crap. I only own a ps3 so don't even speculate on my bias.

  21. yeah that ps eye was really ground breaking. Ps3 fanboys are lame. fanboys in general are lame. i have all three systems because i'm awesome and i'm so disappointed to see what the move looks like. its a black wiimote and nunchuck and last generations camera. sad. natal whether a success or failure is at least branching out. How can anyone look at that picture and not think wiimote and nunchuck? natal is as much a copy of the pseye as the wii is a copy of n64 or nes. its a basic principle improved vastly upon. oh fanboys. so lame.

  22. Most of the things people are insisting only Natal can do are done by software, you morons. And anyway, PS Eye can do everything so far demonstrated on Natal with only one exception: full depth perception. But PS Eye can do a type of depth perception which can be utilised in games just like the ones demonstrated for Natal.

There are videos on YouTube from 2008 showing PS Eye doing face recognition, tracking of multiple items, voice recognition, speech control, UI manipulation, game control, capture of items for insertion and manipulation on screen. Remind you of anything?

Sony has been doing camera-controlled games for six years. Not many, and not all are good, but MS want you to believe Natal is a first, when it's just an updated EyeToy.

  23. At least, Sony's products are reliable. I'm expecting to see natal's three red lights of dead.

  24. Sony were working on a new motion tech and prototypes before the wii and don't forget sony started the popular casual gaming scene on a console with eyetoy.

Natal is a gimmick, it's a slightly more powerful eyetoy and is also being created by a third party company; and not MS.

PS Move is system that on the hardware and core software side is made to be something a different, a choice that offers something different should I say and something that will work as long as the games are coded properly.

PS Move tech is extremely different from Wii, you have image based feedback, audio feedback, xyz axis tracking, angle tracking via a gyroscope, a magnetic sensor, differing colours of the ball is another very minor form of feedback and of course you have input of the standard buttons in a more logical formation.

PS Move also appears more comfortable.

The game software is the only stuff letting it down right now but it's all pre-alpha, hence why it was only shown at gdc, something that was only streamed this year because of popular demand, well everyone got what they want and now they've seen something that is unfinished and rough round the edges for obvious reasons, and now they (aka, you) throw their toys out of the pram.

  26. If you really think Natal is going to be under $150 bucks then you must be mentally delayed. I wouldn't be surprised if it went for $200

  27. The really funny thing this bias article fails to mention is the fact that Natal cannot recognise more than 1 person in front of the camera. So two player games that arent turn based are impossible on Natal. Kinda a big drawback that this article fails to mention.

  28. i'm not a microsoft lover or a ps3 lover (i think there pretty much the same and any shit about xbox graphics being better than ps3 and vice verca is written by idiots) but eyetoy is really old and had heaps of problems but natal is so responsive and psmove is good as well and the friggin asshole whos anonymous on the first few comments fuck you how would u know theres lag on natal you bastard

  29. The prices are a bit off. Only 4 psmoves can be on the same screen or 2 moves and 2 sub-controllers. So update the math. Don't believe me? Check the web yourself.

  31. Plus when natal was being shown for the first time it was distorting the guys every move. His legs were tied together just by him lifting one foot. And the ball smacking demo? Seriously? I flop like a fish out of water and hope I don't hurt anyone in the process.

  32. @Justin guy saying Natal won't work in the dark:

If you ever studied science at a reasonable level when you were at high school then you'd realise that Infra-red is, in layman's terms, 'see in the dark'. It uses light to see us that is out of our visual light spectrum, and therefore it lights up the room for itself while the room remains dark to us.

To the artical in general, Microsoft DID say that Natal will be under $100, and Michael Pachter (I really don't trust him about anything though) says it will be $50, so yes, it WILL be cheaper overall.

I don't have a PS3 so naturally I will not be buying MOVE but it looks like a much improved version of the Wii motion sensing. Natal looks to be fantastic too, and I will be buying it for sure, as will almost all the Xbox 360 owners I know. I am a hardcore gamer but Natal looks to be a lot of fun, and also useful in other ways than just the games themselves.

Valve already showed off Half-Life 2 with Natal functionality, and claimed that it took them 1-2 weeks to convert it to do so. If this is true, just imagine what games we will get in the future.

  33. Oh, and as a note, I'm on my second Xbox 360, not '5th'.

I'm no fanboy, I'd be buying a PS3 today if I could afford it, it's a great console.

The only fanboy here is you, constantly bashing the Xbox 360 and claiming that the PS3 will conquer all with its so-called superiority.

  34. these comments are funny. psfanboys are hilarious. to me, psmove looks like and acts like the wii. basically a carbon copy. Sony needs this to work as they are still dead last in the console wars/sales. for the fanboys who refuse to believe it, look it up. Ms been in the #2 spot since the wii broke out. Out of everything that is coming, it looks like natal is the most innovative thing out there between the three. natal may be similar to the pseye, the difference will be the support for it. All this time, sony sat on its ass with that thing. No real marketing for it, no top notch games for it.basically shovelware up to this point. Like i said, sony needs for this (psmove)to work. ppl forget that the technology in natal isn't just for gaming, its going to dominate all angles of entertainment. Microsoft see the potential in natal that nintendo didn't when it was offered to them years ago. its their loss. But i'm sure they will find something else. I don't have a 360 yet, i will in a few short weeks. I prefer the xbox to ps3 for many reasons. I don't care much for sony or their brand. they are no different than any other company out there. its all about money with everyone. wii, ps3, xbox has something for everyone. ppl will not like everything they see. there are choices. that something all these companies provide. giving us the option to choose. it doesnt make one better than the other. thats immature thinking. this fanboy war is pathetic. you can still play games and be mature about it, fanboys need to grow the fuck up.

  35. WOW PlayStation's new control looks really lame. The only reason they add the colorful ball light is to make it look cooler. plus it looks like a sex toy. Oh and it also seems a lot like the Wii's control. Were in 2010, where advancing in technology which means less buttons being able to use just your'e hands is a great thing. It also takes forever to respond. YOU FAILED AGAIN PlayStation. (YOU DO REALIZE THAT PLAYSTATION MOVE IS A COPY OF THE WII'S CONTROLLER RIGHT?)
