So you want an Xbox 360 and you’re thinking of buying used. Here are a few things you should know before buying a used Xbox 360. If you already did buy used and are having a problem getting on Xbox Live, your console could have been shipwrecked, if so there might be one thing you can do.
Buying used might sound like a win-win situation at first but once you get it home you might discover you can’t get online with it and sign into Xbox Live. Why is this? This could be because the person you bought the console from was a pirate and had modded the console to play pirated games and took it online until he or she got banned from Xbox live, causing the console to now be shipwrecked.
Major Nelson (Xbox Live Director of Programming) just posted the following, “All consumers should know that piracy is illegal, and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs, violates the Xbox LIVE terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox LIVE. The health of the video game business depends on customers paying for the genuine products and services they receive from manufacturers, retailers, and the third parties that support them. This would also be a good time to remind you that the warranty on an Xbox 360 console is not transferrable and if you purchase a used console that has been previously banned, you will not be able to connect to Xbox LIVE".”
So, if you just bought a used Xbox 360 that is unable to logon to Xbox Live because the console was banned, hopefully you bought it on eBay with a credit card, you might be able to report the pirate and get the charge reversed. If you’re thinking of buying used, remember, the warranty will be void and truthfully not worth the headaches you are getting yourself into even if the console is not shipwrecked. Buy new!
If you still want to buy used, buy a Microsoft-Certified Refurbished Xbox 360 System (20GB, HDMI, 2 Wireless Controllers, 3 Games). It comes with a Full 1-Year Microsoft Warranty for only $199.99.
If you just have to buy used just be sure to check the console ID before doing so. Call Xbox support at 1-800-4my-Xbox and give them the console ID you’re thinking of buying. If not banned, you’re ok to get online with it but remember, you will have no warranty, none whatsoever. Not too smart since the Xbox 360 comes with a 3 year warranty against the dreaded RROD. More on that here.
