The New Xbox Experience Preview program

Excited to get your hands on the New Xbox Experience, which will go live all Xbox LIVE regions wide on November 19th? Well, Major Nelson has announced that he has been working on a little project that I think may interested you.

Working with various teams across Xbox, The Xbox team has developed a program to allow a select few early access to NXE. How do you get chosen? The first step is to head on over to Microsoft Connect, sign in with your Windows LIVE ID and join the "Xbox 360 Fall 2008 Preview Program" by clicking on this link, Xbox Preview Program.

Once you do that, you need to fill out the "Xbox 360 Fall Flash Preview Sign Up" survey in order to be considered for receiving the Preview System Update. Their asking a few questions about where you live, your home network, ISP connection and a few other pieces of information. Their looking for a good cross-section of members in order to get the best feedback they can.

The LIVE Service team will then review all of the applications and if you’re selected they’ll send you an email notifying you of your acceptance in the program. A couple of points before you head off to register:

· there’re looking for a few thousand participants, so your chances of making it in are good

· This opportunity is open to all Xbox LIVE Members in regions where Xbox LIVE is available

· Just completing the survey does not automatically get you access to the NXE. They’ll be making final selections from from the completed surveys.

· Xbox LIVE Gold and Silver members can sign up. Priority will be given to Gold members in the selection process.

If you are accepted, you'll hear from the Xbox team in about a week. Make sure your information on Connect is updated so they can email you.

Hope we all get in!

H3R - A Little more of the same but Official Details

Adrift in Tokyo

Since Brian is still wearing his Sailor Moon costume and having his picture taken at the show and Shishka is overcome with jealousy at the costume’s authenticity, here’s a bit of information in yet another slow newsweek for Bungie.

Bungie happily announced Halo 3: Recon, earlier this week at TGS during the Microsoft Keynote speech to attendees of the Tokyo-based show. In the keynote’s wake there’s been a whole mess of questions about Halo 3: Recon that we’re going to clear up below.

What is Halo 3: Recon?
Halo 3: Recon is a standalone, disc-based campaign expansion to Halo 3. It will be available at fine retailers around the globe in Fall of 2009.

I read on some Liveblog that Master Chief got out of the drop pod?
Negative, ghost rider. Instead of playing as the Master Chief (like players did in Halo, Halo 2 and Halo 3) in H3: Recon, players take control of an ODST (an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper) who entered orbit just after the slipspace rupture on New Mombasa (that event, you recall, took place as Regret left the planet – and in Halo 2, you followed him as the Chief). Now, players will learn more about what happened on New Mombasa during some of the events of Halo 2.

Is Halo 3 : Recon a 3rd person / squad based shooter?
Nope. "Recon" is definitely first person and it's definitely still a Halo game as you've come to know it. That said, playing as an ODST in this new setting will bring some new twists to the gameplay.

How much will Halo 3 : Recon cost?
The price point has not yet been determined. While there will be a lot of content to enjoy and a great deal of replayability, this is still viewed as an expansion to Halo 3 more so than its equal.

We saw Assembly at PAX 2008, when will we get more downloadable content for Halo 3?
The Mythic Map Pack will be made available via Xbox Live Marketplace in early 2009. “Winter,” as they say. As soon as we have more details we will certainly share them.

Will the Recon campaign content or the other multiplayer maps be available through Xbox LIVE Marketplace?
Beyond the Mythic Map Pack early next year, there are no plans to release other portions of the Recon package outside of the retail box.

Is there a multiplayer component to Halo 3: Recon?
There are multiplayer maps that will appear as a part of the Halo 3: Recon package. This includes the aforementioned Mythic Map Pack in addition to a few others. You can also experience the entire Recon campaign cooperatively with up to 4 players.

Will we get to play as ODSTs in multiplayer now?
No. The multiplayer maps included with the retail package are straight up Halo 3 multiplayer maps. The ODST and other components that make up the Recon campaign are in a separate bucket and not crossing over into the competitive multiplayer realm. Think of it as two games in one.

Will the Halo 3 : Recon multiplayer maps work with "regular" copies of Halo 3?
If you purchase the Mythic Map Pack early next year via Marketplace and your friend waits and gets them with the Halo 3 : Recon retail package next Fall, you can still play together. The multiplayer maps are all part of the Halo 3 "title ID" family, regardless of where or how you get them.

What about other features from Halo 3?
Halo 3: Recon will still make use of Screenshots, Forge and Saved Films just like Halo 3 does.

Will Halo 3 : Recon have new achievements? Are these the same as the ones already "leaked" online?
There are actually two separate buckets for new achievements. The multiplayer achievements will be considered additive to your existing Halo 3 gamerscore. Some of these will be available when the Mythic Map Pack is released on Marketplace early next year. The Recon campaign will include a complete set of unique achievements and a full bounty of 1000 gamerscore to obtain.

This dude at 7-11 told me that there’s a new Campaign version of Forge coming?
Get your Slurpee somewhere else. The maps included with Halo 3: Recon certainly support Forge and the functionality it affords players. But, there isn’t a new Campaign Forge being added to the Halo 3 experience.

I read somewhere that this is the last Halo game Bungie is making. Say it isn't so!
We're not ready to discuss the other projects underway within the studio right now but Halo 3 : Recon does represent the final basket of goodness that we will be delivering for the Halo trilogy. There are no more offshoots or side stories in the works.

Is this the game that Bungie was intending to announce at E3?
Yes, we are happy to finally be able to pull back the curtain and share our latest project with our fans.

Will Halo 3 : Recon still use the Halo 3 engine?
Yes, this is very much an extension of the Halo 3 you have come to know and love complete with all the features included with the original game.

Is this all Bungie has been working on since becoming independent last October?
"Recon" represents one of several projects that we have underway within the Studio but it's the nearest to release and the only one we're able to talk about for now.

If this is an expansion built on top of the existing Halo 3 engine, why will it take two years to create?
Development of "Recon" actually just began in earnest this past Spring. This project is in the hands of a small team and represents our most ambitious release cycle yet as a Studio.

NXE: Marketplace on the Web

Looking good is the Xbox Live Marketplace on the web. Now you'll be able to be at work or anywhere away from your Xbox 360 and search, purchase and queue to download anything on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

When the New Xbox Experience launches on November 19th, you’ll be able to browse the Marketplace on Xbox.com and queue up downloads. The next time you turn on your Xbox 360, the aforementioned items will begin to download.

Very sweet, great job Xbox team.

Halo 3 Mythic Map Pack Date?

Mythic MP date

There's still 20 Halo 3 achievement's to be had but we're forced to wait for the release of the Mythic map pack to drop before their obtainable. A date hasn't been release for the Mythic map pack just yet, or has it?

We learned this morning that the Mythic Map Pack would be released early next year of '09 and not with the release of Halo 3 Recon that will be released later in the Fall of '09.

What about the hidden date that was uncovered from the Halo 3 Recon teaser trailer? Could that still be something? We did just learn it wasn't the release date for the campaign expansion, Halo 3 Recon, so what is that date, if anything?

The only thing left it could be is the release date for the Mythic map pack since they do tie in with H3R as well. What do you think?

Gears of War 2 goes Gold

GOW2 banner gold

Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad move closer to saving humanity when the highly anticipated sequel launches worldwide on Nov. 7

Microsoft and Epic Games, Inc. announced today that “Gears of War 2,” the blockbuster action sequel to the five million unit selling original, has gone gold.

“After two years of pouring our heart and passion into ‘Gears of War 2,’ the team is immensely happy with what we’ve created,” said Epic Games Design Director Cliff Bleszinski. "This is Epic’s best work yet, and we can’t wait to see the response from fans and newcomers to the series alike.”

“Gears of War 2” tells the story of humanity's last stand against the nightmarish, underground Locust Horde, and is the follow-up to one of the most popular Xbox 360 games in history. “Gears of War 2” is rated “M” for Mature by the ESRB and will be available exclusively on Xbox 360 with an M.S.R.P of $59.99 for the Standard Edition and $69.99 for the Limited Edition.

  • “Gears of War 2” Video Documentary Series
This seven-part documentary series, updated weekly, goes behind-the-scenes with Epic Games as they describe the influences and ambition behind creating the blockbuster sequel. Episodes one through five are available now at: http://gearsofwar.xbox.com/Media/videos.htm

Halo 3 Recon, Mythic Maps and More Details

Joystiq had a chance to talk with Luke Smith and Brian Jerrard from Bungie during a group meeting in Tokyo this morning. Head over and read their right up and listen to the full audio.

Here's the high points I got from the audio:

  • Master Chief will not be part of this game
  • It will be a stand-alone disk sold in stores and boxes next Fall
  • It's also going to include some multiplayer maps, some of those maps will actually be part of the Mythic Map pack that will be released early next year on the Xbox Live Market place.
  • It will be a First Person Shooter not a squad base shooter. There was mention of Stealth, NOT splitter cell
  • As an ODST, compared to playing as in invulnerable Spartan, you are going to have to sort of pick and choose your encounters a little bit differently
  • Everything you have grown to love on Halo 3 will be on H3R
  • H3R is one of a few projects Bungie is working on
  • Working on H3R is a "small agile team" made up of a "bunch of elders" who started the Halo: Combat Evolved franchise.
  • 1000 Gamerscore dedicated to just the campaign for H3R with additional achievements for the multiplayer as well.
  • Pricing more value oriented
  • Still running the Halo 3 engine
  • There won't be a huge leap into presentations
  • More urban darker game a lot of night
  • Built from the ground up on Halo3 tech
  • Still will feel like a Halo game with game play differences, more fragile not a super soldier.
  • Multiplayer will be Halo 3 but with new maps
  • There are weapons, LOL
  • This was the project suppose to be shown at E3
  • Halo 3 and Halo 3 Recon multiplayer will play together
  • Superintendent is somewhat a guiding hand not like Cortana though
  • You won't bump into Johnson, all new people in H3R
  • There still will be melee

So, Halo 3 will be getting the Mythic maps early next year letting us finish up all the Halo 3 achievements before Halo 3 Recon drops.

Halo 3 Recon will have a more urban feel, more at night and a darker setting. An ODST, not a Super Soldier so the game play for the campaign will be more stealth using more tact. The Multiplayer side of it will be no different then the original Halo 3. This way Halo 3 and Halo 3 Recon disc play together on one network. Nice!

If something is missing worth pointing out, please let me know and I will add it. Thanks.

How much do you think it will cost? I say $40 to $45 tops.

Halo 3 Recon will not be Call of Recon or whatever

Call of Recon box art 002

On every forum out there has been some already complaining of the New Halo 3 Recon being Stealthy, giving it nicknames and saying Bungie is ripping off other games.

Luke Smith from Bungie posted over at neogaf saying:

"Microsoft's Press Release: While the feel of this new chapter greatly resembles that of previous Halo experiences, Halo 3: Recon will require you to employ more elements of stealth and cunning than ever before."

"The word "stealth" here isn't really a great word. This isn't a stealth action game like a Splinter Cell game. This is a Bungie-made Halo game where you will play as an ODST, which of course, is different (and no, I'm not talking about how it's different ;b) than playing as a Spartan super soldier. This isn't Halo Cell, Ghost Recon: Halo, Republic Commandalo or whatever."

"Edit: Forgot Call of Halo and Gears of Halo."

My favorite I have seen on the forums is "Rainbow Six Halo" but really, I don't feel Halo 3 Recon will be a rip off in anyway and if there are some similarity's, well you have that in every game, nothing wrong with that.

My only complaint is having to wait a year.

Halo 3 Recon Box Art Shown at TGS 08

Many thought the campaign expansion for Halo 3 would go digital distribution after Marty O'Donnell spoke to GamesIndustry.biz regarding the sale of pre-owned games effecting not only small studios but even larger titles like Halo, but clearly in this snap shoot from TGS 08 they already have box art for Halo 3 Recon due Fall of 09.

I am sure some are glad to see they haven't gone with digital distribution yet since most like trading in their games. I keep most of mine but the few I do trade I trade on Goozex, check them out!

NXE - HHD Install, Now or Later?

The New Xbox Experience is about to drop, Nov. 19th for a matter of fact, and the one new feature the majority of us can't wait for is the ability to install games to our Xbox 360's hard drive. Being able to install the entire game on our console's Hard drive will give us faster load times while giving the ever noisy DVD drive a rest (the wife will be happy).

Here comes the dilemma. Looking to the future, you now have this new Xbox Experience running smoothly on your Xbox 360 Elite and you just rushed home with a brand new game you have been dyeing to get your hands on for months and months, let's say, Halo 3 RECON. What do you do first? Do you waist the time installing it on to the hard drive or play it? Well, you get right into the game and play it silly, because you can! You can install it anytime. You have in your hands right now, Halo 3 RECON!!!

There is no mandatory install on the Xbox 360 so enjoy the New GOTY Game and install it when you're just about to hit the sack or when you're about to head off to work but not right when you get home with it, that would be ludicrous. Hope this helps a few nail bitters.

November 19th can't come soon enough, neither can Fall of 09!
