Halo 3 Vidmaster Challenge and the Pot of Gold

7 on 7

UPDATE: I might have got this theory all wrong, see post Vidmaster Challenge connected to Marathon?

Reminder: Today is October 7th, the one day this month you can get the Vidmaster Challenge: 7 on 7 achievement. The next time will be November 7th. All you have to do is have exactly 7 EXP in any game type and BLAM you have the achievement.

vidmaster achievements

So what's up with the Vidmaster Challenge achievements anyway? There are 4 Vidmaster achievements altogether, three can be had now until the Mythic maps drop.

These three now will not earn you any gamer points but there will (eventually) be a pay-off. Bungie stated, "We’re not going to spoil the fun just yet but suffice it to say that gamerscore isn’t everything. There is a pot of gold at the end of the Vidmaster rainbow and it is something you will want. More details later."

"Pot of Gold", "Something we will want", what could it be? Did they give us a little more details on this in this weeks Bungie Weekly Update?

The name of the achievements are odd, "Vidmaster". What does Vidmaster have to do with Halo except the video share system? Well, in the latest Bungie Weekly Update: 10/03/08, they announced "Render-to-video" a soon-to-arrive feature that's going to be added to Bungie Pro subscription service. Could this be the Pot of Gold they were talking about?

Bungie Pro cost 750 Microsoft Points for the year but could completing the Vidmaster Challenge achievements give us the Render-to-video service without having to pay for the Bungie Pro service? Of course we wouldn't get the larger storage for our videos for free but getting the service makes total sense. This is Something we would want, what do you think? Is this the pot of gold at the end of the Vidmaster rainbow?

The term 'vidmaster' is a reference to Bungie's 'Marathon' FPS series. To be a 'vidmaster' meant adhering to a set of conditions when playing the game, which made the game more challenging. Basically, it was Bungie saying "if you're hardcore, play the game like this!"

Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean the reward for the Vidmaster Challenge in the context of Halo 3 is specifically related to Marathon, even if the achievement icon features the Marathon icon.

Guess we'll find out soon enough...

I just read in the new gameinformer that if you complete the 4 vidmaster challenges and complete three new ones on halo 3 recon, you will get the recon armor. look it up on the gameinformer website.
